Family Literacy
Who is eligible to attend Family Literacy?
Fairfax County residents with limited English skills are eligible to participate in Family Literacy. Programs are offered at various school sites within the county. Students attending evening programs are encouraged to bring their children currently enrolled in kindergarten through 6th grade. Students attending daytime programs are encouraged to bring their children, ages three to five, who are not currently enrolled in a preschool class. The Family Literacy program focuses on supporting the whole family. Including children is very important as it fosters strong family ties and builds literacy skills for everyone.

- Empowers families of FCPS students by improving essential life skills and English language abilities.
- Builds a necessary social network that increases the confidence of each student, allowing them to engage in new volunteer and student advocacy experiences.
- Supports efforts of family members to become active and knowledgeable about their children’s school and community.
- Provides a preschool environment for children ages three to five years old. Teachers and families work with preschoolers to acquire early literacy skills needed in kindergarten.
- Provides child enrichment activities for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Teachers and families work with students to support learning.

Early Literacy Program
The Early Literacy Program seeks to promote parent education and involvement early in a child’s life by providing parents with an opportunity to help their children develop essential early literacy skills at home and gain confidence in their own ability to become active partners in their children’s education. The program provides information and resources on how parents can establish a positive home-school connection by:
Parents receive a certificate of participation upon completion of the program, as well as books and other materials to enable them to work at home with their children after the program has ended.
NOTE: Children must be accompanied by a parent or extended family member.Program Format

The program provides information and resources on how parents can establish a positive home-school connection by:
- Understanding the important role parents play as their child's first teachers.
- Recognizing behavioral and academic expectations of Fairfax County Public Schools.
- Becoming familiar with school programs and services such as: interpreters, parent liaisons, health and nutrition services, library services and enrichment programs, and before and after school care.
Parents receive a certificate of participation upon completion of the program, as well as books and other materials to enable them to work at home with their children after the program has ended.
